Information We Collect
Personal Information
- Email Address: Used for account creation, authentication, password reset, and account management.
- User ID: Generated by Firebase Authentication for account management.
Journal Data (Your Content)
- Daily Journal Entries: Your reflections, gratitude lists, habit tracking, and personal thoughts.
- Habit Information: Custom habits you create and their completion status.
- Reflection Prompts: Your responses to AI-generated reflection questions.
- Clarity Cards: AI-generated insights based on your journal entries.
Clarity Unlock Report Data
- Sensitive Mental Health Information: When you use our Clarity Unlock service, we collect information about your feelings, anxiety sources, worries, stress emotions, values, goals, and personal reflections. This includes sensitive mental health data that you voluntarily provide.
- Report Generation Data: Your responses to our assessment questions are used to generate personalized reports and insights.
- Payment Information: If you purchase premium reports, payment is processed through Stripe. We do not store your full payment card details; only your email and transaction information are stored.
Technical Information
- Device Information: Device type, operating system version, and app version.
- Usage Analytics: How you interact with the app (features used, time spent). We use Google Analytics to understand how our services are used. This service uses cookies and similar technologies to collect anonymized usage data.
- Error Logs: Technical information to help us fix bugs and improve performance.
AI Processing Data
- Journal Content (App): Your journal entries are sent to OpenAI's API to generate personalized insights and Clarity Cards.
- Historical Patterns (App): Your past journal entries may be analyzed to provide contextual recommendations.
- Clarity Unlock Assessment Data: When you use our Clarity Unlock service, your responses to our assessment questions (including your feelings, anxiety sources, worries, stress emotions, values, goals, identity statements, and personal reflections) are sent to OpenAI's API to generate your personalized clarity report. This includes sensitive mental health information that you voluntarily provide during the assessment.
Important Notice Regarding OpenAI Data Processing: When you use Clarity Builder features powered by AI, your data—including potentially sensitive reflections and responses—may be sent to OpenAI (a U.S.-based provider) for processing. OpenAI may retain this information temporarily (such as 30 days) or for longer periods, as required by law, and subject to their corporate and regulatory obligations. By using these AI-powered features, you agree to this processing. If you do not wish your data to be processed or potentially stored by OpenAI, we recommend you do not use the AI-powered features or contact us for alternatives.

Data Storage and Security
Local Storage
- Device Storage: Your journal entries and habits may be stored locally on your device for offline access and persistence.
- Offline Access: You can use the app without an internet connection; your data remains on your device until you delete it or uninstall the app.
Cloud Storage
- Firebase Authentication: Your email and authentication status are stored securely in the cloud.
- Journal Entries: Your journal entries may be stored locally on your device or synchronized to Firebase cloud storage, depending on your app settings.
- Clarity Unlock Reports: Your Clarity Unlock session data and generated reports are stored securely in the cloud using Firebase. All sensitive mental health data is encrypted using AES-256 encryption before storage. Reports are stored in encrypted format and can only be accessed with your session ID.
- AI Processing: Journal content and Clarity Unlock responses are temporarily sent to OpenAI for processing and are not retained by OpenAI after processing.
Security Measures
- Encryption in Transit: All data transmission is encrypted using HTTPS/TLS protocols.
- Encryption at Rest: All sensitive data, including Clarity Unlock reports and mental health information, is encrypted using AES-256 encryption before being stored in our databases.
- Authentication: Secure Firebase Authentication for account access.
- Local Security: Device-level security protects your local data.
- Sensitive Data Protection: We implement additional security measures for sensitive mental health data, including separate encryption keys and restricted access controls.
Third-Party Services
Firebase (Google)
- Purpose: User authentication, account management, and (if applicable) cloud data storage.
- Data Shared: Email address, authentication status, and possibly journal data.

OpenAI
- Purpose: AI-powered insights and reflection prompts for both the mobile app and Clarity Unlock service.
- Data Shared: Your journal entries and Clarity Unlock assessment responses are sent to OpenAI's API for processing.
- Data Retention: OpenAI may store these requests and responses, either for a set period (such as 30 days) or for longer, in compliance with its corporate, legal, or regulatory obligations. OpenAI's privacy policy and retention practices are outside our direct control.

Stripe
- Purpose: Payment processing for premium Clarity Unlock reports.
- Data Shared: Your email address, name, and transaction information. Payment card details are processed directly by Stripe and never stored on our servers.
- Data Retention: Stripe retains payment transaction records in accordance with their privacy policy and legal requirements.

Google Analytics
- Purpose: Understanding how users interact with our website and services to improve user experience.
- Data Shared: Anonymized usage data including page views, feature usage, and general location (country/city level).

Your Rights and Choices
Access and Control
- View Your Data: All your journal entries and reports are accessible within our services.
- Edit Your Data: Modify or delete individual journal entries at any time.
- Export Your Data: You may request a complete export of your data in a machine-readable format (JSON) by emailing support@myclaritybuilder.com. We will provide your data export within 30 days of your request, free of charge.
Account Management
- Delete Account: You can request deletion of your account and all associated data by emailing support@myclaritybuilder.com. Please include your email address used for the service to help us identify your data. We will process your deletion request within 30 days.
- Sign Out: Sign out of your account while keeping your local data.
- Password Reset: Reset your password via email.
Data Deletion
- Account Deletion: Permanently removes your data from our systems. To request deletion, email support@myclaritybuilder.com with your email address used for the service, and optionally your session ID if you have it.
- Local Data: Uninstalling the app removes all local journal entries.
- AI Data: No personal data is retained by OpenAI after processing.
Data Retention
- Data Retention: Your data is retained until you request deletion. To request deletion of your data, please email support@myclaritybuilder.com with your email address used for the service, and optionally your session ID if you have it. We will delete your data within 30 days of your verified request.
- Deleted Accounts: Data is permanently removed from our active systems within 30 days of your deletion request, subject to backup retention for up to 90 days and legal requirements (which may require longer retention for financial records).
- Local Storage: Data remains on your device until you delete it or uninstall the app.
- Payment Records: Transaction records are retained for 7 years as required by Canadian tax and financial regulations.
- Analytics: Aggregated, anonymized usage data may be retained indefinitely for service improvement purposes.
- Error Logs: Retained for 90 days to fix technical issues, then automatically deleted.
Children's Privacy
Clarity Builder is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately.
International Users
If you are using Clarity Builder from outside Canada, please note that your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in Canada and the United States where our servers and third-party services (Firebase, Stripe) are located. By using our services, you consent to the transfer of your information to these jurisdictions.
Data Breach Notification
In the event of a data breach that compromises your personal information, we will:
- Investigate and contain the breach immediately upon discovery
- Notify affected users as soon as practicable, and within 72 hours if required by applicable privacy laws (such as GDPR or PIPEDA) when the breach poses a high risk to individuals' rights and freedoms
- Notify relevant data protection authorities within 72 hours if required by law (e.g., GDPR, PIPEDA)
- Provide clear information about what data was affected, what we're doing to address it, and steps you can take to protect yourself
- Take immediate steps to remediate the breach and prevent future occurrences

Service Termination and Data Handling
In the unlikely event that we discontinue Clarity Builder services, we will make reasonable efforts to:
- Provide advance notice via email to registered users, if feasible
- Allow users to export their data before service termination
- Securely delete user data from our active systems after a reasonable grace period
However, we cannot guarantee advance notice in all circumstances, and we reserve the right to discontinue services at any time. Payment records will be retained as required by applicable law (7 years in Canada).
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by:
- Posting the new privacy policy on our website and/or in the app
- Updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this policy
- Sending you an email notification (if you have provided an email address)
